How to bill a customer in a non-default currency

Last updated: June 19, 2026

There is no org-level setting to enable a currency. Billing a customer in a currency other than your org default is controlled entirely at the plan level. Price a plan in the target currency, subscribe the customer to it, and Lago sets that customer's currency from the plan and issues their invoices in it. Your org's default currency does not need to change and does not gate this. It is simply the starting default for new plans and customers.

How plan currency drives customer currency

A plan carries its own currency. When you subscribe a customer to a plan priced in, say, EUR, Lago automatically sets that customer's currency to EUR based on the plan. There is no separate customer currency switch to flip first, and the org default never overrides a plan's explicit currency. So the two steps are:

  1. Create a plan with its currency set to the target currency, for example EUR.

  2. Subscribe the customer to that plan.

After that, invoices for the customer are generated in that currency.

The one constraint to check first

By default, each customer is billed in a single currency, so this clean two-step assumes the customer has not been billed in another currency yet. You can freely set or change a customer's currency while they are new, but once they have started billing in one, for example they have invoices, a wallet, or an active subscription, that currency is locked. If a customer is already billing in another currency, bill the new one through a separate customer rather than switching the existing one. If you genuinely need one customer billed in multiple currencies, that is a separate capability, so reach out to Lago.
